History Of Rudraksha

Rudraksha bead is a fruit of Rudraksha trees which are commonly grow at a certain altitude in the mountain – the tree is commonly found in the Himalayan region.

For a long time, rudraksha beads have been used as prayer beads in Hinduism.

Rudraksha is associated with Shiva, God in Hinduism. It could easily notice from its name which is derived from the words Rudra that is another name of Lord Shiva and Aksha (eyes).

The word Rudraksha has its etymological beginnings in the two Sanskrit words "Rudra" and "Aksha" meaning Lord Shiva and Teardrops respectively. According to "Shiva Purana", Lord Shiva once went into deep meditation for the well being of all living creatures. When he woke up, he opened his eyes and tear drops fell on the Earth. These tear drops took the form of seeds that later on became the Rudraksha tree. Rudraksha therefore means 'The Tear of Lord Shiva'. The dry seed-capsules from the Rudraksha tree form the rudraksha beads, which are being used as a rosary and are also worn as a chain.

It is said in the scriptures that Hindu yogis wearing these beads experienced tremendous amount of tranquillity and inner peace which helped them meditate in a focused manner.

Originally there were 108 types of Rudrakshas in the form of different faces, known as mukhis this can be counted by the series of lines across the seed, but today there are only 38 types. Each mukhi has different electrical impulses. Most Rudrakshas are five faced which usually made into a necklace of 108 beads, one of the rarest being the one faced symbolizing Lord Shiva himself. The Rudraksha possess mystical and divine properties and creates a protection for the wearer.
